Synopsis:
We live in a world where 100 million girls are missing due to female foeticide and gendercide. A world where 62 million girls of primary school age are out of school and where 20-50% of girls have experienced abuse from a family member. Three quarters of the world’s HIV sufferers under 25 are women and women under 20 represent 50% of the number of sexual assaults throughout the world. Feminism may have promised equality and sought a better and fairer world for women but the reality is that girls and young women make up almost a quarter of the world’s population and face the greatest discrimination of any group in the world.
I Am A Girl (working title); documentary project will focus on ten girls from around the world and explore the reality of what it means to grow up female. The film, will hypothesis what their future might hold, how the status quo is maintained and how their lives could end up based on the current statistics. We will explore patterns of inequality in different cultures and canvas the attitudes of the girls’ mothers, fathers and brothers.
